The team building the future of database performance

Meet the founder

Hi, I'm Justin Swanhart, the CEO and founder of Leap DB.  I’ve been working with databases and distributed systems for my entire twenty-two year career.  While I started out as an Oracle DBA, most of my career I have focused on open source database products, including MySQL and MariaDB, and designing tools, applications, and systems that bring the enterprise database features of closed source databases to open source databases. I've focused mainly in the OLAP, analytics, and reporting spaces, which are under-represented in the MySQL and MariaDB ecosystems.

I've worked at and with many fortune 1000 companies. I was the platform DBA at Yahoo! and have been employed by some of the largest ecommerce, gaming, and advertising services on the Internet.  My experience working as a consultant, support engineer, and trainer at the top MySQL consulting practices, including Percona prepared me for creating a high performance analytical database service for the cloud.

Why I built LeapDB

MySQL solutions are generally focused on OLTP (online transaction processing) performance, but reporting on the large volumes of data generated by these systems is generally problematic because MySQL and MariaDB queries are single threaded and these databases lack materialized views, which provide an ACID compliant and consistent denormalization capability to databases.

Many of the well known available solutions to these problems involve aggressive caching (using Memcached, Redis, etc) and the use of enterprise or cloud analytics systems (such as RedShift) which are often difficult to integrate with MySQL and MariaDB.

What is LeapDB

LeapDB is a software as a service offering that is based on many of the techniques pioneered by the open source database tools that I developed, available for use in an easy to administer database appliance that can run in the cloud.

WarpSQL is the open source database server on which LeapDB is built. LeapDB is a set of proprietary extensions to WarpSQL.
